It was a successful tour, the most positive aspect being the team management and the senior players being proactive.
It is relatively easy to improve a situation that has obvious flaws. It is a far greater challenge to maintain the standards and continue to improve. The standards achieved in the test against France [won 45–6] are the benchmark.
Contributing to the success was the implementation of a leader ship group. The growth of these players’ ability to lead was the key. Each of the players had a portfolio they controlled.
The players gained a great understanding and respect for each other as they developed. They grew to understand they had similar challenges as international rugby players and these challenges were better handled collectively than individually. This brought togetherness — they were ‘one’. They now have a collective rather than individual responsibility and went to ‘war’ for each other.
